Anybody know about motorcycles?

Anybody know about motorcycles?

Postby Bellevillian on Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:08 am

Street motor cycles specifically....
I plan on someday getting my own bike.

Does anyone have the scoop on motorcycles, what the cost of a decent bike is? Cost of a great bike? Costs of insurance in comparison to regular auto? How does the licensing work?

Hmm

Depends what you're looking for. If you're a n00b you're going to want something that's decent and relatively small = cheap for insurance + good on gas. I am guessing you're looking for a sport bike and not a cruiser.

Cost:
250cc = ~$6500 new, $2000+ used
500cc = ~$7500 new, $2500+ used
600cc+ = $9k+ new, $2500+ used

Insurance:
If you're under 25 and/or the bike is over 500cc = at least as much as a car. If you're over 25 and/or the bike is under 500cc = not so much.

Licencing:
Once you turn 16 you can write your M1 test. This is purely written and gives you the ability to ride during the day and not on 400 series highways. It's a 90 day permit.

Sometime during this 90 days you must take your M2 practical test. You ride around a little course and dont screw up, they give you your license. You can now ride anywhere and anytime you want but not with alcohol in your blood.

After two years you can take your M test. Test guy follows you around on a bike while you ride yours. Quite similar to G test in most respects. After that, you can drive drunk(sort of).

Hey, thanks!

Hmm.. So, what would be a good start other then saving money for a decent bike and insurance.... study for the written m1 test or just go take it? I heard theres training courses you can take that costs somewhere around $400.00.

250cc would probably suit me for a first bike. I have a lot to learn about bikes...

I couldn't imagine riding a 1400-1800cc motorcycles, I'm likely to kill myself on a 250cc.

Insurance sounds like it's a fairly hefty, but seasonal coverage only means it probably would not be to bad.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the good starter info.
